Children’s Drawing Project

I watched Chloe, a 3 year old girl draw herself and another picture which she called “Sun and Grass.”

1. Self Portrait

-started with the face first

-no eyes, nose or mouth attempted

-moved on to hair

-looked for brown and commented that that is her hair colour (which it is)

-commented that she has long hair and drew herself with long brown hair (she does not have long hair but when asked about it she said she does and I did not argue)

-did not seem to care about any other colours she used, the hair was the only time she looked for a specific colour of felt

-had a hard time getting the felt caps on and off and needed help to get them back on at the end

-gave herself arms and legs

-used a red to draw a “dress” she commented that she was wearing a dress (which she was)

-after commented that she drew a red dress (which she did)

-did not attempt to colour carefully, just waved the felt all over

-at the end she handed it to me and stated “Me in a Dress”

2. “Sun and Grass”

-I asked her to draw another picture of anything she wanted to

-she grabbed the green felt and made grass by using her writs to flick the felt from bottom to top

-she than found the yellow and drew a circle and than added the sun’s rays

-done very quickly

What I learned

-felt lids are hard for three year olds to put back on properly

-three year olds have no concept of being careful not to get felt all over the table although the 10 year old with her was very concerned about the mess the 3 year old was making

-children are very happy and proud when you display their work

-holding a felt properly requires lots of fine motor coordination that is difficult for young children

-when she got tired she ended up holding the felt in her fist

-she had the concepts of the main body parts (legs, body, arms, and head) but was not concerned with the details of the face, hands and feet

-it seemed that at times she was concerned with what colour she used (for hair, grass and sun) but for the body it was what ever colour she picked up
